All participants identified a desire to get involved, or remain involved in the community – and to ‘give something back’. Joining the Study Circle was seen as one way to do this.
Members of the group found connections across age groups – young families moving to a new area, ageing grandparents and young grandchildren. The importance of being there to share, play and comfort children was discussed. Single parents discussed the pressures of returning to work.
The Paynesville group focused on helping people connect with the community by developing a welcoming brochure subsequently produced via partnerships with the Apex Club and the East Gippsland Shire. One member was acknowledged as a wealth of knowledge for things not commonly known and ‘local wisdom’ helped to personalise the information.
